A Rebuttal from the Department of Advanced IntelAIgent Defences

What's my takeaway from all of this? A functional definition of AI: a system that's intelligent until it isn't. .... Chris Williams, Editor in Chief [El Reg]

AI, just the same as a crashed and burning humanity, El Reg? Hmmmm? Now that is a most odd takeaway too hard to swallow for some to be accepted and enjoyed/employed and deployed.

And does it also more accurately and not specifically describe El Regers/the El Reg EcoSystem ..... Intelligent until they aren't and it isn't ‽

Can that be plausibly denied and one still retain any semblance of credibility?

:-) The AIMachine says No.

Analogous Bletchley Phormwork .... with AI Skunkworks

Currently AI is somewhere between getting a licence and Lewis Hamilton. .... Chris G

Please be advised, and feel free to dismiss as errant nonsense, some current AIs are at least akin to a Koenigsegg or GMA T50, with some advising even they, in relative terms, languish far behind in developments and applications in the field.

However, whenever such is as a Colossus, it wouldn't be expected to be widely known for some considerable time.

Being grateful for small mercies :-)

As far as I can discern, the reasons for downvotes can range from causes as insignificant as a spelling mistake or a typo to a polar opposition in opinion or a total failure in ability to parse a comment. .... Chris G

So, not so much an aid used as a fine honing tool for vivid/vital/virile/vivacious commentators then, Chris G, more of a big stick for frustrated wielding when unaccompanied with cogent reasoning .... a crazy crutch for a loony toon? :-}

Thank goodness the upvotes don't suffer similarly and offer so little as nothing in return

Re: Automation in/of Killer Applications

I can't help wondering who is supposed to benefit from a machine that can generate convincing* hate-speech. It's not exactly a scarce resource, and there's no evidence that the human generators are short of time or motivation. .... Kubla Cant

Surely any sensible civilised community/government/country would immediately destroy, as in unceremoniously kill, a machine that can, and more importantly and disturbingly, does generate convincing* hate-speech?

Sound advice to humans would be to not mimic that particular peculiar model lest the same agreed acceptable fate would await one.

Keep it simple. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil and you'll be perfectly safe and sound and relatively fully protected from all thoroughly deserved, relentless merciless attacks and sudden unexpected, bolt out of the blue demises.
